Terry Kirby

Head of Construction, Berkeley St Edward
Terry has been in construction for over 30 years. He started in the industry as an apprentice bricklayer and worked his way up to run his own bricklaying company employing 50+ people. In 2000, he joined Berkeley East Thames as an award-winning site manager. In 2023 he joined Berkeley St Edward and was promoted to Head of Construction. He has started an Early Years Support Group at his project, Oval Village. He has devised and implemented a monthly programme to help develop the skills, knowledge and competence of apprentices, graduates, assistants and newly promoted managers. Terry organises an on-site challenge once a month. For example, a snag inspection on a drylining white box with our contractors, Stanmore, to help the team understand the standard we should be delivering to and what they should look out for. He also personally oversees a separate benchmarking inspection for the junior team to have an opportunity to view manufacturer’s guidance and specs with his support and contractor to overview for QA benchmark. Terry has a real talent for making sure the team have a practical understanding of the new NHBC building regs and organises for the group to present the impacts on real-life, onsite case studies. He is also making sure the junior group can understand the bigger picture and has recently tasked them with a presentation on programming from piling to golden brick. Terry makes sure the group come together with a summer social and Christmas lunch, and is planning future seminars with representatives from the Chartered Institute of Builders and our environmental specialists. Terry firmly lives by the mantra ‘always lay a brick tomorrow better than you have today’, which he first learnt as an apprentice.
