Mark Allen
An experienced construction leader with over 30 years in the industry and more than two decades pioneering retrofit practice across the UK, both in detailed technical delivery and strategic development. A long standing guest lecturer at Salford University, I deliver specialist teaching on retrofit, refurbishment, building performance, and the risks and opportunities of material selection, covering legal, technical, scientific, and on site implementation.
My work includes serving on advisory panels and contributing to pioneering UK retrofit research from 2011 onwards, using the Energy House 1 programme at Salford University, a landmark project addressing performance challenges in the UK’s hard to treat housing stock.
I also provide authoritative insight into how indoor environmental quality influences occupant health and long term wellbeing, drawing on evidence from the first UK Multi Comfort building at Kings Hawford School, where I collated and analysed over 66,000 data points alongside behavioural studies.
In my current role as Head of Technical Services at Fortem, I lead technical strategy for a contractor specialising in Repairs & Maintenance, capital works, and retrofit delivery for social landlords. My team oversees whole life asset management of social housing stock and explores how IoT enabled monitoring can improve indoor environmental quality for tenants, because every home matters.
