Wates starts £24m Shoreham flood defence | Construction Buzz #213
Southern Housing Group has given the nod to Wates Residential to start work on a £24m investment programme to increase flood defences along the river wall between the River Adur and Shoreham beach.
The enabling works contract will advance plans for a new Shoreham waterfront development after receiving £10m from its Homes England’s House and Infrastructure Fund to facilitate the construction of new flood defences along the river Adur where the new homes will be situated.
River wall strengthening will take nine months to complete. Following this, work is expected to commence on the main Free Wharf housing scheme develop in early 2020.
This significant flood defence project will not only protect the homes at Free Wharf but will also enable further regeneration along Shoreham Harbour, and importantly protect existing homes and communities in the area.
Southern Housing Group development director, Oliver Boundy, said: “We are delighted to begin work on the enabling phase of our 540 home Free Wharf development on the harbour at Shoreham-by-Sea.”
