this suspended treehouse by mexican firm talleresque is anchored to the floor but appears to float like a lantern, illuminating the surrounding forest. located in one of mexico city’s largely green areas, casa flotante, which aptly translates to ‘floating house’, is elevated on nine stilts to mimic the surrounding trees.
spanning a total area of 936 square feet, the three-storey structure contains multiple living spaces including indoor and outdoor areas. the base of the structure is made up of nine columns arranged in a grid, supporting a large timber platform above.
raised above the sloped terrain, on the ground floor a multi-purpose studio features a workspace, kitchenette and dedicated area for a drum set. half of the space is used as an outdoor living room.
underneath the large timber platform space is reserved for storage and a water cistern. meanwhile, an outdoor staircase wraps the entire home and leads to the first floor where the bathroom and shower is located. lastly, the third floor hosts the bedroom.
loor-to-ceiling windows, large glazed openings and skylights illuminate every floor of the floating house.talleresque used locally available materials to further strengthen the project’s connections to its surroundings. timber is featured predominantly, from the exterior cladding and stair treads to the interior walls, floors, ceilings and furnishings.
