European Space Agency (ESA)
The European Space Agency (ESA) is Europe’s gateway to space. Its mission is to shape the development of Europe’s space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world.
Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) is one of ESA’s largest commercialisation programmes, and, since 2010, has helped more than 1000 European companies of all sizes deliver space-based services and products with a global impact. More than 100 successful smart city-related projects have been delivered to date.
ESA BASS supports the sustainable commercial exploitation of space assets, data and capabilities for the benefit of industries and communities here on Earth, fostering the competitiveness of European businesses and collaborating with representatives of non-space market sectors to maximise the impact of its investment.
ESA BASS has a strong focus on sustainability and supports Europe’s Green Transition and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Now part of the European Space Agency’s ACCESS commercialisation programme, one of the BASS priorities is smart and green cities.
What makes a city a happy place to live and work? Beyond infrastructure and technology, it is about creating urban environments that improve wellbeing, environmental sustainability and quality of life. Space technologies are increasingly helping cities understand how they grow, how citizens use urban spaces, and how to design, plan and build healthier, greener, and more liveable communities.
