The construction industry is unique because of the people that work in it

Tony Ryan - UKCW Role Models 2018/2019

I have always had links to the construction industry from as long as I remember. Many family members have made very success careers in construction so it’s not a surprise that from an early age I knew the industry I wanted work in.

I studied Building Services Engineering and Sustainable Energy Technology in the Cork Institute of Technology. Upon completion I decided to apply for the Kingspan graduate program in 2011.

Having been founded in Ireland in the 1960’s and since become a truly international success, Kingspan attracted a huge amount of applicants from top universities. After multiple rounds of interviews I was selected for a graduate position and I embarked upon a journey to the UK to start my career as a Building Performance Analyst with the Kingspan Insulated Panels’ technical team in Holywell, North Wales.

Fast forward 7 years, I now lead that team along with other technical teams throughout the UK and Ireland helping ensure we leverage our technical expertise so that designers and other construction industry professionals receive unparalleled technical advice and support.

My career to date has exceeded my expectations. I have been mentored by world class mentors, visited various parts of the world, worked on prestigious projects, presented to several stakeholders on a range of different topics and met exceptionally talented individuals along the way.

The construction industry is unique because of the people that work in it. We are teams that deliver projects for the benefit of people. We do this with future generations in mind while continuously learning, innovating and improving our products and services.

Having recently completed my MBA at Manchester Business School and Kingspan’s Executive Acceleration Program (PEAK) and being promoted as Technical Director for Kingspan Insulated Panels in the UK and Ireland earlier this year, it’s clear that my hard work, dedication and commitment has been met with reward. This coupled with support from my family has certainly given me the motivation to continue to climb the career ladder and inspire others to do the same.

The future is exciting in our industry as we dive further into the world of digitalisation, establish new ways of working, discover new technologies and recruit for roles that don’t even exist yet. As time passes and we continue to work together, I look forward to experiencing all the construction industry has to offer.
