Digital Twin vs BIM: A Perspective

09 Oct 2020
Digital Construction Hub
Have you been the victim of twin-wash?  Increasingly, unscrupulous suppliers within the built environment have begun to rebrand their BIM solutions as Twin solutions.  This not only introduces confusion and ambiguity within the market but also hinders the adoption of innovation through the perpetuation of existing solutions as novel.
In an attempt to resolve this Dan Rossiter MCIAT, sector-lead for the built environment at BSI, will step away from the comfort of formalized standards to reflect on his own observations and experiences about BIM, Digital Twins, and Digital Transformation.  In doing so, he will consider what is an information model, what is a digital twin and perhaps more importantly, what they are not.  Through these reflections Dan will discuss what makes a digital twin unique and will consider whether the concept is sufficiently robust for Dan to propose an intuitive test as to whether a solution is a digital twin or not.
