Current issues in BIM Technology
08 Oct 2020
Digital Construction Hub
Software providers and other technology developers have naturally played a key role in the global development of building information management (BIM). What were once discipline-specific task- or process-based tools have evolved into powerful authoring applications; collaboration on conventional 2D communications has evolved into sharing and development of models; and office-based working is now complemented by site-based applications available on mobile and wearable devices. And the scope of BIM has increasingly broadened to cover the whole life of built assets, not just the design, delivery and handover phases.
This presentation will give some background to the UK BIM Alliance’s technology group and then talk about some of the issues that it has discussed in recent months. Some will reflect wider industry shifts (for example, the development of Digital Twin thinking, and whole-life approaches to building procurement), while others relate to particular technology challenges (CDEs, standards, "Good Data", product data, interoperability).
