Interiors have a big impact on how a space can look and feel and that is why it is important to get it right. For that to happen, inspiration needs to strike, and that is where the Surface and Materials Show comes in.
Forming part of UK Construction Week (UKCW), the show is at Birmingham’s NEC between 9 – 11 October. It features hundreds of exhibitors, alongside an Innovation Trail, seminars, and CPD sessions all set to insprie architects, interior designers and specifiers.
New innovative materials
UKCW’s theme this year is the ‘Future of Construction’. The Surface and Materials Show will bring the the future of materials to the show via its very own expo, MaterialDistrict.
MaterialDistrict is addressing the ever increasing pressure to produce designs that incorporate sustainability, circularity, saving energy, healthy environments, smart solutions, lightweight constructions and conceptual interiors. By showcasing 100 international materials that define the important role of the future of materials in the built environment, there is sure to be something to surprise and inspire.
Titled, ‘Materials that Matter’, MaterialDistrict’s Expo will showcase materials for internal and external use and will include lightweight composites, recycled plastic, engineered wood, natural materials and new resources that used to be considered ‘waste’.
The expo is aiming to educate as well as explaining functional properties of the materials as well as its aesthetics.

Continuing the journey of inspiration is simple, just follow the Innovation Trail which is a self guided tour across UKCW. Visitors will find inspring exhibitors such as: Bruag, ANS Global, Finsahome, Furlong Flooring, Morland, Reco Surfaces and William Smith Group.
There is also a wide range of seminars with opportunities to expand your knowledge on:

The UKCW Stage will host high-level discussions around key industry issues and topics.
- RIBA president, Ben Derbyshire, will be joined by Nigel Ostime, Chris Langdon and Paul Nash, at RIBA: Building in Quality. Covering recent concerns and announcing the latest research, this is a talk not to be missed;
- Architect and TV presenter George Clark will lead panel discussions on stopping building failures and the digital future of construction;
- Stephanie Akkaoui Hughes, founder of AKKA Architects, will discuss how to innovate through interactions;
- Barbara Res, the project manager behind Trump Tower, will share her experiences as a female in construction and working with Donald Trump. Advanced booking is essential; and
- Lord David Blunkett will discuss how technology and diversity can turn the skills gap around.
Once inspiration has struck it’s time to unwind there are plenty of areas to relax. The Beer Festival is bigger than ever this year. Sponsored by Velux, this area features street food, live bands, a gin and fizz bar and rockaoke. FIX Radio will be broadcasting from there from all three days. There is also a central bar in Hall 11, sponsored by the Elliott Group and the Timber Bar in Hall 9 sponsored by Germany Trade & Invest.
