James Knott

Health & Safety Manager and Mental Health Advocate, SJE Carpentry & Joinery and SJE Fireproofing
I am a mental health advocate and campaigner who is dedicated to improving mental health in the construction industry and the local community. Having suffered from Anorexia Nervosa in 2015, I am now committed to sharing my story and experiences to raise awareness and encourage others to seek help. My efforts to improve mental health in the workplace started in 2021 when I became a guest editor for MIND's monthly newsletter. In the newsletter, I shared my personal perspective on mental health, specifically in the construction industry. I have also given talks on mental health at Multiplex Construction sites in London and an IOSH Chiltern Branch meeting. Additionally, I have collaborated with Beat, Mental Health UK, Shout, Mental Health Foundation, SANE, Peppy, SHP Health and Safety News, and SIX MHS to spread awareness through articles, vlogs, and podcast talks. I attend The Man Cave UK, a weekly support group meeting for men in Milton Keynes and surrounding areas. I am a part of the committee group and help local lads through their struggles. I am inspired by the strength and bravery of the attendees. I have also volunteered as a Lived Experience volunteer for a session at the Institute of Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience (IOPPN) in London at Kings College, providing insights to third-year medical students on the lived experiences of mental health sufferers. As someone who has experienced mental health issues, I am passionate about breaking down stigmas surrounding it, particularly in male-dominated industries like construction. I believe that it is important to be open and honest about one's struggles and encourage others to seek help. Winning the "UK Construction Week role model" award would be an incredible honour to help raise awareness to motivate me and continue my efforts to improve mental health in the industry and beyond.
