Health & Wellbeing within the asbestos industry
Over 17 million tonnes of raw asbestos was imported into the UK between 1871 and 1999. Of this some 4 million tonnes was used in the construction industry, being found in over 9.4 million buildings. The result is the present crisis in asbestos related deaths, rising from 2000 pa in 1999 to almost 6 thousand last year. The majority of these deaths are in the construction and related sectors. With comparable annual death rates, 80% of suicides are males under the age of 45. This presentation will explain how these deaths may be minimized in the future and how associated wellbeing issues addressed.
