The aim is to promote productivity, speed, quality, sustainability and social cohesion, showing how innovation can create new value in the industry and stop the short-term, purely cost-driven ‘race to the bottom.

To aid the search for what is genuinely new and valuable, a new Innovation Zone has been established in partnership with the Construction Innovation Hub – an organisation focused on transforming construction through digital and advanced manufacturing technologies. The Innovation Zone is a non-sales environment where visitors can explore the new ideas, learn and be inspired.

Why is it innovative? 

MachineMax is a revolutionary wireless telematics solution for off-highway fleet (think Fitbit for Fat Yellow Machines).

INDUSTRY CHALLENGE

Companies in asset-heavy industries (Construction, Mining, Material handling) find it virtually impossible to track and manage their off-highway equipment (excavators, dumpers, cranes, forklifts, crushers, etc). This is because they tend to have a mixed fleet (in terms of ownership and manufacturers) and there is no easy to install and use solution that works across the entire fleet. As a result, companies are leaking significant amounts of cash every year due to high idling, wasted equipment rentals and lost productivity.

OUR SOLUTION

MachineMax is an end-to-end, easy to use platform. MachineMax sensors are the same size as a pack of cards and have battery life of 18 months. Users can track engine hours, idling hours, shift duration, fuel consumption and location for any machine irrespective of make, model, age or ownership. It’s also wireless so unlike other telematics solutions, MachineMax sensors don’t require hard-wiring. Companies can use it to cut idling (thereby reducing diesel consumption and carbon emissions) and increase productivity. Our customers have managed to increase asset utilisation by 75% and decrease idling and emissions by 15%.

INNOVATION

Our innovation is in solving an age-old industry problem in a simple elegant way using advanced technology. We use cutting edge technologies (including Internet of things (IoT), cloud computing and machine learning). Yet it’s also extremely intuitive - customers can self-install sensors in under a minute and get real time data on their computers and mobile phones, so don’t require an engineer or IT professional. The key innovations include:

- Machine signature: we create a unique signature for each machine using its vibration patterns - Idling detection: using our proprietary ML algorithms we can detect engine idling by using machine vibrations

- Fuel consumption: we can use engine vibration to estimate fuel consumption - Battery efficient real time tracking: we can track an asset real time 24/7 for 18 months on a single battery charge.

Why is it innovative?

ITI’s VR Crane Simulator provides users with an immersive experience of sitting in the cab of a crane and performing operational tasks. It holds over 1,000 scenarios and supports eight different crane models. The desktop version that would be on display, is easily portable and quick to setup with a small footprint, allowing customers to train and assess their employees anywhere in the world.

ITI’s VR Industrial Skills Library utilizes Oculus technology to provide efficient and standardized practical assessments for personnel working in the lifting industry. This includes crane and rigging life saving rules, construction hazard assessment and equipment orientation. The library will continue to grow to include rigging/slinging application and inspection assessments and more. This doesn’t just test a person’s theoretical knowledge, it puts them in scenarios where they have to make real time decisions showing they can take what they’ve learned and use it in the field.

Why is it innovative? 

Semi-Permanent Power is an innovative collaboration between SSE Enterprise and Pure World Energy designed to provide a cleaner, greener, cheaper and more flexible way of meeting the need for temporary generation. This collaboration exclusively utilises Capstone’s unique microturbine to provide its customers with four clear benefits.

1. Cleaner An oxygen rich exhaust including ultra-low NOx, Sox and Particulate Matter emissions are the result of the microturbine employing innovative air bearing technology which eliminates the need for oil and lubricants. With 92% lower NOx emissions than diesel (18 mg/nm3 vs 195 mg/nm3 @15% O2) Environmentally compliant, going beyond Medium Combustion Plant (MCP) Directive targets for both NOx and SOx. Clean exhaust, with high levels of oxygen content compared to conventional generation methods (17-18% O2 content) The option to utilise bio fuels, which is becoming an increasingly popular choice

2. Commercially viable against diesel generation as the turbines are fuelled by natural and biogas. The degree of saving will of course depend upon the size and scope of the project. However, typically the unit price for electricity will be approximately 20% cheaper than the equivalent cost of diesel reciprocating engine-generated electricity for a period of 6+ months, on a high utilisation plant.

3. Modular technology unlike conventional generators, our solutions utilise modular technology to meet demand from as low as 65kva to 20MW and beyond and provides flexibility that enables us to tailor meet demand. The microturbine also has a vastly reduced maintenance cycle requiring maintenance every 4,000 hours of operation thus reducing the need for site visits and servicing. It’s also very Quiet with just 65 dba (decibels) at 10 metres

4. Only paying for the energy consumed, this model is set designed to disrupt how customers pay for their temporary power with installation, fuel and other costs included. The customer will only pay for the energy consumed at an agreed price per kW hour for an agreed period.

Capstone microturbines have over 100 unique patented design features and have a reputation as one of the industry’s most advanced and reliable means of generation. An example of it innovation is the microturbines air bearing technology, eliminating the need for lubricants and coolants.

Why is it innovative?

As the UK moves away from heating homes with fossil fuels the provision of alterative heating technologies is crucial. The UK government are firmly backing air source heat pumps as one of the technologies that will heat our homes in a more sustainable way. Our Brand Ecodan has always been one of the quietest Air Source Heat models on the market and the New Ultra Quiet Ecodan operates with an industry leading sound pressure level at 1m of 45dB(A), now means that an Ecodan can be located much closer to the assessment position and pass planning. Why is it innovative?

New Acoustic Vibration Reduction (AVR) unit eliminates noise caused by diaphragm compressors

Marsh Industries has launched a unique product for the water and wastewater treatment sectors, the ‘Whisspurr’, an innovative acoustic vibration reduction unit that significantly reduces noise and vibration caused by diaphragm compressors.

Designed to fit inline between the compressor and air diffuser, the Whisspurr dampens the high frequency pitch and absorbs sound and vibration generated from the compressor whilst enabling a consistent, unrestricted flow to the air diffuser – the Whisspurr does not restrict air pressure from the compressor, nor does it increase back pressure to the compressor. 

Managing Director of Marsh Industries and innovator of the Whisspurr, Steve Boyer, said “For decades noise pollution has been an accepted side-effect of diaphragm compressors used in domestic and commercial sewage treatment plants. The Whisspurr was designed to address this issue, however the unit can be used on virtually any appliance that depends upon the use of diaphragm compressors.”

The Whisspurr is available in four standard sizes and is compatible with all types of compressor; Bibus Secoh, Charles Austen, Nitto, etc. The unit can also be retrofitted to existing compressors.

A sewage treatment plant unlike any other sewage treatment plant

Leading environmental engineering specialist, Marsh Industries, has launched a unique range of portable sewage treatment plants for temporary office blocks, portable buildings and small commercial premises.

The new range of units, branded Portapura, have a clear advantage over typical wastewater options for temporary sites in that they are portable, compact and provide discharge that is 25 times better than the EN standard. This means effluent discharge can be made directly to a watercourse or a correctly designed drainage field.

The Portapura (patent pending) can be installed above or below ground in as little as two hours without the need for heavy plant, concrete and shuttering, providing substantial cost and health and safety benefits.

Tested to BS EN 12566 part 3 over a three year period at PIA GmbH test centre in Aachen, Germany, the Portapura exceeds UK and European Standards, meaning the unit can also be used to replace inadequate septic tanks in accordance with forthcoming Environment Agency ‘General Binding Rules’ for septic tank discharges, effective on 1st January 2020.

Why is it innovative?

The camlock system reduces labour for standard shuttering by more than half. Compared to large systems such as Peri, it is still faster and cheaper in many situations. It is much less material intensive than standard shuttering and does not require a large investment like Peri. It utilizes standard plywood and 4x2 timber but due to the nature of it, you use much less material and almost completely eliminates the need for nails. It will also make plywood last longer and give you more uses. It also aids in maintaining position of rebar inside the forms eliminating the need to reach in and put in side-chairing. You do not require structural bracing on the outside of the shutters allowing it to be used in tighter areas. This is a proven product which has been in use in North America for several decades.

Cat-Guide

Why is it innovative? 

The Cat-Guide product is a unique solution, designed to aid the installation of lightweight cables. This has been invented by Zip-Clips R&D department to provide the industry with a solution for changes in the 18th Edition electrical regulations.

The changes introduced through 18th Edition detail, that wherever suspended ceilings contain wiring systems in escape routes, the cables shall be supported such that they will not be liable to premature collapse in the event of a fire (Regulation 521.11.201 refers). All areas of a building would now be considered as a potential escape route, with all walls, windows and access points utilised in the event of a fire.

Regulations 522.8.4 and 522.8.5 call for cables to be supported, either continuously or at appropriate intervals, such that no damage or undue strain will occur to the cables themselves or to their terminations.

Adequate support for cables for fixed wiring within a suspended ceiling void can be achieved in a number of ways to ensure that the cables are kept well away from the grid and from other services, such as:

  • Providing a catenary system, to which the wiring system may be attached using proprietary clips, cable-ties or cable-hangers at appropriate intervals.
  • Attaching the cables by suitable clips or cable ties to ceiling support rods.

The Cat-guide removes the labour intensive, time consuming task, of fitting the necessary metallic cable ties, at the recommended 30cm intervals. The Cat guide will meet regulations by in fact exceeding the recommended intervals, whilst maintaining the required fully metallic retention.

Trialled and tested in conjunction with Shropshire fire service, this device will provide a solution for containing lightweight cables above suspended ceilings, where the alternative would be an over engineered installation of bulky basket or tray containment.

CAT-Guide saves 66 components plus metallic Tie-Wraps which are needed on the traditional solution. CAT-Guide saves over 60 components per span.

Traditional solutions typically cost between £121.54 - £77.38, meaning Cat-Guide can offer a saving of 25% up to an eye-watering 59% reduction in cost.

S-2825FRE (A2 Fire Rated Epoxy)

Why is it innovative? 

Being able to ask what is needed for future markets begets the need for innovation, which is not just about problem solving, but about simplifying them, creating new paths and along the route finding something new.  Structural Adhesives Ltd has done just that, spending over two years researching, investigating and developing one particular product, our A2 Fire Rated Epoxy Adhesive, S-2825FRE.  This revolutionary product was initially borne out of the idea to produce an epoxy that impacted less on the environment, a so-called ‘cleaner’ adhesive. 

The sea change in worldwide attitudes towards how we as individuals’ impact on the environment has never been more relevant.  Manufacturing and in particular, the Chemicals Industries, have their part to play. With this in mind the research and development team were tasked with finding a resolve.   Research started in 2017 and during the Summer that year, the entire Construction Industry had to embrace new guidelines on the use of non-combustible materials.

The UK requirement for a less carbon heavy adhesive was propelled following the Government ban in 2018 on the use of combustible materials and the need for A1 or A2 – s1, d0 rated products on external walls above 18m.  Generic adhesives inherently contain large amounts of carbon which is combustible but is fundamental as it is an element heavily involved in the bonding mechanism.  Companies in construction are looking for alternative adhesives but there is currently little available.  Structural Adhesives Ltd have developed S-2825FRE to provide a product that fills the gap in the market, thus giving developers alternatives to mechanical fixings and the more combustible adhesives.  S-2825FRE is an innovative construction product which demonstrates durability, non-combustibility, high bond strength and furthermore contains significantly less raw materials from non-sustainable resources compared with general construction adhesives. S-2825FRE is classified as A2, s1, d0 according to BS EN 13501-1 and has passed independent freeze/thaw, heat/rain and  bond strength tests.  Structural Adhesives Ltd are aiming to be the first to launch a commercially available A2 adhesive for use above 18m in the UK.  When we began to look at the need to develop a cleaner adhesive, one that contained less epoxy (less oil derived materials), we never envisaged that we would also be balancing the impact on the environment along with functionality, safety and fire regulatory compliance.  We believe S-2825FRE is now more relevant than ever.

Why is it innovative? 

Timber has long been a feature of interior design, but the trend for a more natural looking interior is still popular. Provincial Plank is a premium interior wall cladding product made explicitly from Canadian hardwoods, mainly Maple and Ash. This makes Provincial Plank the only hardwood wall cladding product on the UK market. The use of hardwood makes the product more versatile and durable than its softwood alternatives. Softwood tends to expand and contract when put under stress in different environments (wet or dry), this can result in movement in the timber and visual defects such as shakes and splits. The benefit of using hardwood is that the wood keeps its structural integrity even when experiencing different environments, meaning that the product keeps the desired visual appearance from install.

The primary use for Provincial Plank is to add a statement wall, or accent feature to any interior. The FSC certified product features the naturally occurring characteristics of knots, grain swirls and colour variations. In recent times, consumers are becoming more environmentally aware and seek products that offer sustainability. Provincial Plank achieves this due to its long-life span, and the fact it is created using a 100% sustainable product, wood. Alongside this, studies have also been completed to suggest that using natural products inside can improve general wellbeing – as these studies become more apparent, the shift to using alternative materials inside a commercial or residential space will increase further.

Provincial Plank is suitable for use in commercial and residential spaces. There is wide scope to use the product in office space, bar and leisure facilities, or around the home in living spaces, bedrooms and even kitchens. As mentioned, its hardwood properties allow for it to be used in wet environments.

It can be described as a “DIYers” dream as the product is extremely easy and straightforward to install. All that is needed is a tape measure, spirit level, nails or commercial glue, a hammer and a keen eye for detail. You can create a variety of different looks and finishes adding to its versatility.

Why is it innovative? 

The K-KAP was developed to provide a simple, effective and time saving solution for the protection of the reinforcement at the ends of concrete flooring beams that are used in block and beam floor construction (as detailed in the Building Regulations 2013 - Part C, section 4.17).

The innovation is in K-KAPS’ simplicity of use, provision of complete protection and how it helps builders reduce the manual handling risks associated with concrete beams weighing 140kgs or more. It is unique as there are no similar products in the marketplace. The K-KAPS simply slide over the ends of the concrete beams and are fitted in seconds; as opposed to alternative methods of protection for the reinforcement (such as wrapping with DPC material or painting with bitumen) which take several minutes per concrete beam and don’t truly provide the necessary protection. The K-KAPS can be fitted prior to the beams being installed into their final location, reducing the need for further lifting or having to add the protection whilst working in the foundation voids.

K-KAPS are fully tested and certified by BRE; it meets and exceeds all standards for damp protection material and use as an underground building product. K-KAPS are a registered product with LABC and certified within the LABC Warranty and Premier Guarantee schemes.

Whilst there is a cost for the K-KAPS, its saves money by significantly reducing the labour element to apply the protection. Compared to the wrapping method costs can be reduced by approximately 50%.

K-KAPS are made in the UK from 100% recycled polyethylene. Once the product is established as the method for protection of concrete beams, it will use several tonnes of recycled plastics each year for manufacture, thus preventing said plastic having to be disposed of. The UK manufacturing base also helps keep transport requirements to a minimum for the UK marketplace, further helping the environment.

“Catus” Relative Bricklaying Robot

Why is it innovative? 

Semblr is automating building construction using small, swarming robots. Manufacturing has already had its robot revolution, but those existing robots used in manufacturing are fundamentally flawed for construction. Construction robots must be mobile, affordable and tailored to the specific tasks at hand. Semblr’s mission is to build those new robots specifically for construction, starting with bricklaying.

Bricks and blocks are one of the oldest building methods, and the fundamental methods of spreading mortar and positioning bricks has remained the same for millennia. Bricklaying is crucial to the housebuilding industry, with 80% of new builds requiring a brick facade, with each house requiring around 10 to 15 thousand bricks to be laid by hand – a repetitive, slow and entirely manual process. The work is labour-intensive with a large amount of higher risk working at height on scaffolding. The construction sector is in the midst of a skilled worker crisis: bricklayers are scarce, whilst recruitment and training are challenging in the current climate.

Semblr solves the problem of bricklaying by assembling brickwork automatically using small (cat-sized) construction robots which work together in swarms. Semblr’s robots climb over the structure as they build it, rather than requiring external support, allowing them to build structures many times larger than themselves. The robot is designed to carry out all required functions as an individual; as more robots are added to the team, they distribute the work amongst themselves to achieve a proportionally higher laying rate. By using this swarm methodology, the robot system has robustness and adaptability, while retaining a low-cost hardware. By distributing the work between many small robots, Semblr can build at speeds similar to larger robots, but with significant cost saving, and far less impact and disruption to the rest of the site.

Semblr will be offering the robots as a service (“Bricklaying as a Service”), giving several advantages: lower cost, higher speeds, increased reliability and full integration with the rest of the digital building production workflow (BIM integration). Each robot has an array of onboard sensors (RGB-Depth cameras, Lidar etc) allowing constant monitoring of the construction site. Follow-on benefits include reduced material wastage (typically 20%) and elimination of re-work (typically 10-15% of project cost). Construction workers are given the improved role of “robot supervisor” rather than manual worker, allowing a healthier, safer and more productive working environment.

Sewer Flow Regulator

Why is it innovative? 

When planning a new building development one of the largest costs can be the provision of sewerage services. Often the Water companies will rightly be concerned that the additional load created by the new development will cause overload both within the existing sewerage network but also at the local sewage treatment plant. This may lead them to insisting that the sewer network and/or treatment works is upgraded at considerable cost and delay to the developer.

This British innovation is a retrofit sewer flow regulator [SFR] system that links into the existing sewer network to inhibit the flow from the site under the control of smart sensors deployed within the network. Lightweight and modular, mains, battery or solar powered, the SFR can be installed into 4in or 6in outflows in under 2-hours and offers a cost saving estimated to be up to 95% compared to civil works. Further, the SFR offers a significant reduction of embedded carbon when compared to pouring concrete. The SFR’s operation can also be monitored remotely via telemetry or over the Internet using Satellite IoT Technology

What makes this product innovative is the fact that it is the only BrickGuard on the market that is compatible with all popular scaffold systems, including Layher, Plettac & Peri Ring System Scaffolds, Haki and Cuplock System Scaffolds and Tube and Fit Scaffolding. Our Brickguard is also the only Brickguard product to bypass the rosette on the ring system scaffold and also fits securely over the obstacles created when the Brickguard is fitted to Haki Scaffolding.

Our BrickGuard product provides extra stability in harsh conditions and unrivalled performance in strong winds, compared to other BrickGuard products. This is achieved by the unique and innovative design of the handle, coupled with the increased length of the two toe board connectors, which in turn increases the overlapping fit. (This includes System Scaffold at 150mm & Timber Scaffold at 225mm).

Another innovative feature is the unique design of the Brickguard handle which provides a robust, durable and secure connection to the handrail with the ability to be used on any handrail with a diameter between 30mm (Haki, Plettac, advanced guardrail) 48mm (conventional tubular guardrail) and Peri 60mm rectangular ledgers.  

Due to the unique design of the MAC Universal BrickGuard, the product can be stacked up to 150 units high on a 1m x 1m pallet space, whilst still maintaining a safe load. This creates up to a 50% improvement on competitor products during transportation, saving on logistic costs and load area.

In terms of money saving, the new Mac Universal BrickGuard provides 20% saving on materials used over a 100m run of independent scaffolding when using 2.5m bays with Ring system scaffold, this is due to the brickguards ability to bypass the rosette on scaffolding standards where typical brick guards cannot and 3 components would be required per bay.

Why is it innovative? 

We use Real Time Rendering and Virtual Reality to help our clients test, iterate and develop better masterplans. Real time rendering is the technology behind computer games, re-appropriated and used in combination with high end VR headsets it allows Developers to comprehend, interrogate and communicate unbuilt space in ways not previously possible.

Working live in 3d space speeds up iteration and increases design comprehension, allowing better decisions to be made quicker. Working in this way we help our clients to compare design options, to virtually place-make, understand retail strategy, test key user journeys, desire lines and site lines for wayfinding and advertising, understand development phasing and test meanwhile scheduling. A better understanding of these issues makes for better designed cities.

Why is it innovative? 

JointKit is an innovative project deriving from an earthquake resistant building system, and patents were applied for in 2018 and 2019.  The product is a flat pack jointing system that can be assembled without glue or screws to form corner joints and extension joints.  Another variant is a roof Ridge Panel kit.  More variants are in the design pipeline, e.g. angled joints for octagonal buildings or bays.  The primary objective of the system is to allow unskilled operators to construct a sturdy timber frame.

JointKit provides prefabricated joints that ensure accurate right angles and plumb verticals which can be assembled in less than a minute for each joint.  Eight corner joints take around 5 minutes to assemble.  The resulting frame can be the basis of a either garden buildings - workshops, garden room, summerhouses and sheds, but also easily and quickly constructed dwellings capable of providing long-term temporary accommodation to a high standard.

As a timber framed building, the JointKit system allows the inclusion of standard windows and doors, effective insulation and the installation of bathrooms and kitchens.  Superior to commonly used steel containers, which often suffer from condensation, the JointKit based dwellings provide the environmentally friendliness and warmth of timber and the flexibility of an upgrade path that is the hallmark of a modular system.

The JointKit system is a unique and patented system that de-skills the timber frame construction industry.  It come as a flat-pack system, enabling easy deployment in disaster relief situations and meets the criteria for Transitional shelters laid down by the Global Shelter Cluster strategy, which is the main guide for disaster relief dwellings. 

Crucially, the frame and roof can be erected in less than a day by competent tradesmen, and this saves more than a day of expensive labour by skilled tradesmen.

In the UK market every JointKit pack sold creates sales of £1000- £2000 of stock materials from the builder’s merchant or timber merchant’s stock inventories.  The materials cost of the building in the photograph below was £1974 including VAT and labour was a total of 9.5 days. 

With a nominal cost of labour of £1,500 excluding VAT, the total cost is £3,474. 
A normal retail cost would be between £7,000 and £12,000.

Why is it innovative? 

Environmental issues are now dominating the news agenda, and the construction sector has not escaped scrutiny. Recent figures on plastic waste in the construction industry make for shocking reading. Some 23% of the total plastic consumed in the UK comes from our sector, with 20,000 tonnes of plastic being sent to landfill every year. It is estimated that over 2 million single use plastic sealant cartridges are put into landfill every week in the UK.

We are listening to the trade and working to tackle the pressing environmental problem of disposing of the plastic sealant cartridge. With the impact on the environment in mind, Hilton Banks has launched its best-selling HB42 All-in-One Sealant and Adhesive in 400ml foils, removing the environmental problem of disposing of the single use plastic cartridge.

The 400ml foils produce 95% less waste than the single use tubes and users get 38% more sealant than in the 290ml plastic tube. Using the latest MS Polymer technology, the product seals, sticks and fills, is flexible up to 230%, can be over-painted and works in the wet. It is low in Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and bonds to almost anything; it is also food safe, fully curing in 24 hours.

The foils are very durable and foil guns are easy-to-use and remain extremely clean throughout their use. They also take a plastic sealant cartridge so can be used with every type of sealant if required. At the end of their life, the waste left over from foils is tiny compared to the plastic tubes and the foils are much easier to dispose of. There are therefore cost benefits to be had from moving away from single use plastics. With HB42 foils producing 95% less waste, the amount of skip space or waste disposal is greatly reduced. With the foils also containing more sealant (400ml) compared to the 290ml cartridge, the builder saves time by refilling the gun less often.

The enhanced API can be simply used to link / integrate with other systems, reducing cost and duplication. And finally the APP can be utlised on any mobile device: Android or iOS.

The project consists of development of a chain of walkways in various locations aiming to promote the social interactions, with an emphasis on use of sustainable/renewable energies and protection of the environment. One of the major concerns of the modern life in various urban areas is to find a kind of sustainable design that can bring different urban spaces into harmony through development of self-sufficient social grounds, with an approach to the environment, society, economy, and above all the pedestrians. Converting sidewalks and pedestrian roads to “walkways” can contribute to realization of this goal. Such areas, in addition to developing desired urban space and improved urban texture, can be utilized as a ground for social and intergenerational interactions, and promotion of job opportunities. In this plan, the booths dispersed along the roads and junctions, which damage the urban texture, will become a part of the desirable and attractive urban spaces. The plan emphasizes the social aspects of life, which has been missing in the course of urban/industrial life, and aims to bring different generations closer to each other and draw their attention to their responsibilities against the environment.
