The gender pay gap in the construction industry is lower than the overall pay gap for the UK, according to a new report published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings shows that while the UK currently has the lowest gender pay gap on record at 18.1%, the construction industry has gone further with a gap of 16.3% – 1.8% lower than the national average.
All companies with more than 250 staff will have to publish their gender pay and bonus gaps from next April in an effort to increase equality. The government also plans to have 33% of women on boards by 2020 and eliminate all-male boards in the FTSE 350.
“It is fantastic to see we now have the lowest gender pay gap on record. No woman should be held back just because of her gender,” said minister for women and equalities Justine Greening.
“The changes we’ve made so that men and women can share their parental leave, the support we’re giving to get more women into the top jobs at our biggest companies and our drive to get more girls taking STEM subjects at school are all helping to reduce this gap.”
Gender parity campaigner Wise also welcomed the results of the survey.
“It’s really good news because it helps to get the message out that there are real opportunities in construction and engineering for women,” said Wise chief executive Helen Wollaston.
It is estimated that addressing the gender gap could add £150bn to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2025.
